Advising people not to get this EP would be like
pushing them off a cliff. Put this in your walkman and
go watch a beautiful sunset. Now tell me what life is,
or isn't. Dang.
Symphonies for everyday life. Waves crash on the shore,
the light fades. Epic and sweeping. So sweeping, it
literally leaves you breathless. There are no vocals,
not a single one. Just instruments, only instruments.
You know, Bach made a lot of instrumental music -
Beethoven too. So did Wagner, Gershwin, Stravinsky,
Liszt, Bartok, Strindberg, Cage, and Strauss. They
weren't decried for being anti-musical! Why is
instrumental music anti-music? Post-music? Why not
pre-music - classical music predates all of these
labels! Why not just music, beautiful music?
So much for that. For fans of Mogwai's louder, more
rockin', distorted moments, this EP has more of those
than Come On Die Young. Listen to "Rage: Man" or "Small
Children In The Background" for your fix. Nor is there
a lack of understated stillness - there is plenty of
calm between the storms. "Burn Girl Prom Queen"
incorporates soaring horn harmonies courtesy of the
Cowdenbeath Brass Band. Braithwaite describes the
current state of Mogwai as such: "It's so easy to
express anger by playing loud, and that's what everyone
expects. We'd done that... You can be so much more
intense by building a passage slowly." And intense it
is.
